ABSTRACT

The focus of this study is to find out the influence of politics on Nigeria education sector using Olorunda Local Governement Osun State as a case study. The study used survey research design.46 questionnaires was issued to the respondent who are staffs of Osun State Universal Basic Education in Olorunda LGA. However 39 questionnaires was retrieved and validated for the study. Data was presented and analyzed using frequency and tables. The findings of the study on the perceived effect of politics on education sector includes;determines funding and school management; influence of political actors in who get employed at the education board thereby filling the system with unqualified teachers; Embezzlement of funds made for procurement of educational facilities among school heads who are members of the ruling party. The study therefore recommends that the government should allow educational institutions to exercise their autonomy. screening for the position of School Heads in government schools should be done within the State Education board and Local Government Education Board instead of federal governing interference by fixing the positions with their party loyalist. Political influence, religion, ethnicity and god fathers should not take pre-eminence over good education system as these will lead to educational decadence.
